Boost Your Mental Health through Self-Care Reminders
Updated: Nov 29, 2022

It's no secret that taking care of your mental health is important. But what you might not realize is that one of the best things you can do for your mental health is to practice self-care on a daily basis.
Self-care means different things to different people, but at its core, it's about taking the time to do things that make you happy and help you relax. It can be anything from taking a relaxing bath to going for a walk in nature. I like to incorporate mantras, meditations, exercise, and other mindfulness techniques to benefit my mental health. And I can tell you from personal experience that taking time out for yourself can help reduce stress, improve your mood, and boost your overall sense of well-being.
But perhaps the most noteworthy benefit of self-care is that it can help prevent mental health problems from developing in the first place. By taking care of yourself, you're more likely to be able to cope with stress and anxiety in a healthy way, preventing those negative spirals that can throw your entire week, month, or even year off course.
Using a Calendar to list a Daily Self-Care Reminder
Have you ever walked into one of those calendar stores that pop up in your local mall around the holiday season? They always have a massive variety of day-by-day calendars, and typically, several of them offer daily self-care techniques, mantras, meditations, etc. If it’s nowhere near time for one of those to magically appear, a quick search on Amazon should yield a whole host of options, allowing you to choose one that will help you remember to set aside each day for yourself.
Finding Apps for Self-Care Reminders
Yep, there’s an app for that!
With more and more individuals beginning to understand just how important self-care is, it’s no surprise that an influx of apps that can give you daily self-care reminders have appeared. That doesn’t mean that all of them are quality - some are relatively superficial, so make sure you thoroughly check them out before investing in any of them - but there are quite a few that can help you begin to rewire your brain to focus on your personal care and development.
A quick online search found this list of apps you could try. With a little more in-depth dive, I’m sure you can find one that best suits your personality and interests.
DIY It!
After looking through some of the apps, calendars, or even journals available on the market, you might find that you want something a little more personal. That’s no problem at all. You can get a blank journal, adapt your online calendar, or even purchase a large desk calendar that allows you to write in a daily self-care routine.
But before you get started, I encourage you to start small and don’t overthink it. It’s easy to get caught up in the moment and over-commit to a massive change. Instead, start with 10-15 minutes of daily self-care, especially if you are new to this. Set up a rewards system to help you stay disciplined. Then don’t be afraid to adjust or adapt it to better suit your needs as you move forward.
Find What Works Best For You
There is no wrong way to remind yourself to practice daily self-care. You might find a pre-made reminder tool such as a day-by-day calendar that provides you with a daily mantra, meditation, or introspective activity to try, try out a few different daily self-care apps, or put together a reminder system for yourself. The goal is to find a system that works best for you and helps you remember to prioritize yourself - mind, body, and spirit - every single day, even if it’s just for a few minutes at a time, to begin with.
Over time, see if you can increase the amount of time you’re able to devote to your self-care. I promise that the return on investment you see will be mind-blowing. The more you put into yourself, the more you’ll be able to increase your productivity, think more clearly, make stronger and more positive choices, and see your goals and dreams come into focus and become attainable.
